Later someone came up with the idea of using a Pan Pot instead of a switch. This is what you hear on many of the first stereo albums like the Beatles where the instruments were hard panned to one side. They had a switch that would feed the signal 100% hard left, hard right or feed both channels so you have a mono center. This is in fact what they did in the early days of stereo.

But if done well it can add a nice stereo effect to something which started off in mono If not used subtly this method can sound unnatural, especially when listening on headphones, and should never be done to sub bass frequencies (under say 150Hz). Plugins that use this type of technique include Waves ADT and Brainworx Stereomaker.
